A note from our Board President, Andy Held, on the power of community-led Shabbat Services:
"In my Rosh Hashana address, I asked you to think about ways to Grow Together with the people in your life, and with our Temple community. I have an item to add to that list – how can you grow closer to your Judaism?
I am a Jew. I will never give up my Jewish identity – too many members of my family died for being Jewish. I have found a few things in my life that help me feel connected to my Jewishness:
- The Passover seder, when my family retells the story of my grandfather leading a seder on a German ship in 1939 with my grandmother and his two young daughters as they were fleeing the Nazis.
- Every B’Mitzvah I attend; specifically, the passing Torah L’Dor V’Dor, from Generation to Generation. It connects me with thousands of years of Jewish history, passing Torah down through the ages. Being present while the Torah is passed in our sanctuary, by families in our community, is always moving to me.
I’ve added a third thing to my list recently: being part of the Community Led Kabbalat Shabbat services. For over 2000 years of Jewish history, our ritual and our prayer were led by us – by anyone and everyone in our community. Being on the bimah and helping to lead our community in prayer and reflection is a powerful experience – a deep connection to my Judaism. And it was fun! I got to pick readings from two of my favorite poets.
Growing Together is our theme for the year. Growing Together as humans, as members of the TBT community, and as Jews. I invite you to be part of our Community Led services - it may be a way you can Grow Together with your own Jewishness.
