Solomon Karmel

Hello, I am Solomon Karmel, chairperson of the Temple B’nai Torah Development Committee. I’ve been a member of TBT for about five years and started serving on committees and donating to TBT about three years ago. I particularly enjoy lay-led Torah studies on Saturday morning, services in the park, and any Temple events involving quality food.

Dues account for less than 40 percent of the Temple’s budget. So we rely on generous donations to bridge the gap. We have some long-term donors but need new people to step up as well. Our budget would run a deficit every year were it not for generous donations from members like you. The Fall annual campaign going on now helps raise a substantial portion of that money.  We raise money to support all we do at temple, from clergy and staff, to maintenance of our beautiful building.

So that members get to know each other better, a theme for a Temple-wide Spring Fundraising party will be a Party Palooza (mark your calendars for March 18, 2023!), where members donate events we’ll bid on, some of which may be home-catered, themed dinners, Sisterhood tea, young family parties or perhaps music or cooking lessons.   If you have a skill you would like to share or just love to throw a good party, let us know what you would like to host - or just come and bid on a party at someone else's house!  We look forward to seeing all of you there to help build community.

This month, we held a wine-tasting party for last year’s “patron circle donors” (people with the capacity, generosity, and interest to give substantially). The party included a Havdalah service at the end of Sukkot, followed by a wine-tasting at the temple of donated foreign (including Israeli) and West Coast wines. We learned from a local sommelier about the qualities of the fine wines tasted, while enjoying a light meal.

To raise money and thank Temple members, the development committee plans parties, writes letters, and calls members. The committee is not terribly time consuming, the parties are fun, and the work is important for the Temple.

If you might like to join our committee, please write to contact@templebnaitorah.org, or if you might like to see how to give, consider visiting https://www.templebnaitorah.org/contribute. Thanks for your support!
