Lady Luck on the Hungarian Archives Roller Coaster
Presented by Theodore Grossman
Monday, June 8
7:00 PM at the Mercer Island JCC
This program, hosted by Jewish Genealogical Society of Washington State, will give tips about researching Jewish family history in Hungary and Slovakia and will help those doing genealogical research in more than one country who must research documents in more than one language. Jews living outside Austria-Hungary proper but inside the empire - Slavs, Czechs, Poles, Ukrainians, Rumanians, Serbs, Croats, etc. - were subjects of the Hungarian government. The different strategies created some very interesting developments - some lucky, others not.
Ted Grossman is a retired newspaper editor and publisher, most recently at The Islands' Sounder, on Orcas Island. For the past three years he has been taking classes in the Hungarian language in Seattle and New York City, auditing classes about Eastern Europe, and doing research at the Family History Libraries and at the Jewish History Library in New York City. During this time he made two research trips to Hungary and Slovakia, each lasting about three months.

Ongoing Classes and Events:
Teen Philanthropy Programs Launching at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle
We want our teens to care about the world in which they live. But the truth is they already do. They just need a way to express how much they care. The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle is launching a teen philanthropy program that will give them the tools to begin a life of giving.
The programs will combine Jewish teachings on philanthropic giving, nonprofit agency research and site visits, hands-on volunteer service, group discussions and grantmaking. They have a multi-faceted approach in order to develop a community of young leaders and connect them to the organized Jewish community.

J.team

J.Team involves approximately 20 teens from 9th-12th grade. Teens are selected into the program after a short application process. They will meet monthly over the school year, participate in non-profit agency site visits and reviews, and engage in hands-on community service projects, while they learn about Jewish values of giving. Finally J.Team members decide as a group, where to donate over $7000 of community donated funds. The teamwork approach to philanthropic giving makes this program a win-win for our community’s teens and non-profit agencies.
J.Team will start this fall. Applications are due June 30.

Youth Mitzvah Fund
Youth Mitzvah Fund is for 12-14 years olds. Teens open up personalized accounts in their names at the Jewish Federation with money donated into the fund by friends and family. Teens can grant a portion of the funds each year to the charities of their choice. Teens that have opened a Youth Mitzvah Fund are invited to attend three programs (in 8th grade), which include nonprofit visits, community service opportunities and discussions on Jewish values of giving. They can continue to donate money and make grants each year, until they graduate high school.
